In 1968 Areanal Volcano (mountain in the background) errupted, covering 3 villages and killing 87 people. Here we are climbing around in the lava rock fields from that explosion. Since that erruption, Arenal Volcano has been continuously errupting, but on a much smaller scale. Every few moments lava rocks are thrown from the peak and roll down the mountain side in a spectacular display, complete with booming sound effects. Some of these rocks are the size cars! At night, this display of red shattering lava rock is both breathtaking and frightening.
